Key Takeaways
New Moderator account designation for each channel gives a single account responsibility to Curate the Main channel feed.
Owners can use mod bots like Automod and Airstack to distribute curation authorization to multiple accounts.
Channel Owners are figuring out how they want to Curate their main feed. /purple, /memes, and /gaming are all taking different approaches.
Changes described here are live as of 5/23/24.
Only 2 accounts matter for each channel
Owner
- account that owns the channel
Moderator
- could be owner, another caster, or a mod bot tool
2 feeds in Warpcast, a curated "Main" and unfiltered "Recent"
Casts get curated from "Recent" to "Main" by being liked by the Moderator account
Recent
feed is made of ALL casts in that channel (even the stupid, off-topic ones)
Terms that have specific meaning
Curate
means highlight from Recent content stream into Main
feed of a channel, requires Moderator
to like the cast
Hide
means remove content from Main
feed
2 options for Main
feed, moderated or unmoderated. See below image for details.
Unmoderated Priority mode
works well as a default for Owners
that aren't sure what they want to highlight yet.
Owners can have manual curation by setting themselves as Moderator, delegate to another caster, or distribute responsibility to a mod bot and grant their team authorization for access to the bot.
Additional changes in the first week since changes went live:
with moderation on, Recent feed is now shown in Priority mode
Unfiltered
feed available to channel owners
This feed is full of spam in my experience, but good to scroll through to curate good content into Main
Owners can turn off Recent
feed if desired
Choose between chronological or algorithmic Main
feed
Curate however you like by installing automod Cast Actions, can Hide content by removing from Main or Curate
to move content into Main feed.
current focus for the channel is retropgf round of funding for last 2 months of farcaster growth experiments
owner wants to keep content focus on retropgf
@ccarella.eth requiring members + text "#retropgf" for top-level casts
@nonlinear.eth leading the charge with moving channel revenue on chain and redistributing the majority to the channel members via tipping
A labor-intensive process that makes sense for channels that require a high level of manual curation, leveraging Automod's "Curate" cast action. But it's better than previous monetization with channel passes.
Better for channel owners - warps cannot be cashed out of warpcast
Better for mods - revenue for their work curating
Better for users - redistributing channel revenue to those that make the channel valuable
I've previously written about Cast Actions
[Cast Actions] give users not only customized experiences, but also users can initiate those experiences on any cast. They are not limited to casts with that particular frame in them.
So channel mods can use the "Curate" action on any cast to move it from "Recent" to "Main" for channels. This decentralizes channel moderation from Warpcast to other tools such as Automod and Airstack and allows channel owners to distribute mod abilities.
@cameron, @riotgoools and me want to keep it simple and hard to game, and bring the focus back to curated relationships
Following automod rule set Curates casts into Main from casters who are followed by channel hosts/mods or have power badge.
This is confusing to read but is basically creating an OR logic gate using multiple NAND gates (thanks electrical engineering!)
This is subtly different from the unmoderated Priority Mode
, the Owner
's follows get curated versus Priority
which shows casts from a viewer's follows. So it's a more focused and content curated by the channel owner's preferences rather than the viewer's.Owner
can also expand the trusted social graph by adding additional "User Is Not Followed By" rules within the ruleset.

hey anyone need a video creator, dev community person, and a docs writoooooor hmu @cameron @dawufi @cassie @samuellhuber.eth @thatguyintech @linda https://ispeaknerd.github.io/
okay I am in live. https://ispeaknerd.github.io/posts/work-sample-2-developer-documentation/ adding a little bit more context explainers to this and a image of the results in between and it's gold Video as cherry on top. That's kind of also what I try to achieve in our docs. Do you want to write about Farcaster by chance :D
would love to, have done a fair bit of fc writing nontechnically, love to transfer that over to tech side https://paragraph.xyz/@ispeaknerd.eth/curating-chaotic-channels https://paragraph.xyz/@ispeaknerd.eth/passport-control-for-onchain-and-social-identities

i am still not exactly sure what i need to do to now to set up channel co-hosts 🫣 the move to decentralized channels kinda flew by me and i need to spend a little time understanding how to now set up automod and also consider adding a hypersub. the learning never stops around here i also always forget the link to the farcaster notion lol so maybe the ask is add the channel notion link under the little i in channel details another client could definitely make co-host management a native feature via automod integration
eyo – here's a walkthrough. tl;dr login to automod, add the channel, go to moderators & add folks, you mod w/ cast actions (for now!) https://warpcast.com/jtgi/0x8f9e97ad
thank youuuu this is what i needed
Gotchu fam https://paragraph.xyz/@ispeaknerd.eth/curating-chaotic-channels
I went down this hole yesterday 😓 the new was seems to be to set up moderators on Automod. They won’t be cohosts exactly but will do the job.
i see, thank u!

thank you!
Q: Do you moderate your channels? If so, what do you use and how do you decide what to keep? Yes, I moderate channels manually. Currently, I don't use automod for any of the channels I moderate because I don't believe it effectively filters relevant content. Instead, I manually review all posts and give a "heart" to what aligns most with the channel's ethos and mission, ensuring it appears in the main feed. When changes around channel ownership and the introduction of automod were implemented, I found the communication confusing. My feed was flooded with opinions about the changes, but I couldn't find a definitive source of truth. Even now, I feel I lack a complete understanding of all the available tooling options. I see this as a fundamental issue that Farcaster needs to address if the platform is to reach a broader audience. Curating content should be straightforward for moderators, and they should be promptly informed about system-wide changes affecting channel operations. ⬇️
To improve this, channel moderators and owners should receive direct notifications or messages about updates, including links to relevant information and guidance on how these changes impact their work. Additionally, there should be a comprehensive list of FAQs for each channel, detailing its purpose, allowed content, relevance criteria, and mission. This information could then be fed to a trained /llm that reads posts in the channel to act as an effective auto moderating tool. ⬇️
Please understand that my opinions come from a Web2 perspective and are based on my experiences as a user. I believe these gaps are why newcomers without crypto experience may find it challenging to stick with the platform. Currently, the most significant incentives and value propositions are related to crypto networking and meme coins like DEGEN, or any future coins Farcaster might introduce. It’s not just the focus on crypto; the platform can feel burdensome to use and less rewarding unless you’re already connected with the community IRL.
recommend mine and @clauswilke's articles on the subject https://paragraph.xyz/@ispeaknerd.eth/curating-chaotic-channels most recent 3 articles from claus https://paragraph.xyz/@clauswilke
I currently moderate manually /lightchasers The volume is low enough to do this. I look at every post. I wish there was a ban user option for the spammy/off topic stuff.
Shouldn't posts from the owner or host of a channel automatically show up in the main feed? Right now I have to like my own posts to get them to show up in main - or is this just user error? cc: @horsefacts.eth @dwr.eth
If you set yourself as moderator then yes you have to like your own casts bc only casts liked by moderator will display in Main. Use a mod bot as Moderator if you want it to be more automated, I'm using @automod from @jtgi Article I wrote https://paragraph.xyz/@ispeaknerd.eth/curating-chaotic-channels
Terrific read, thx! 300 $DEGEN I’m gonna give no mod a shot then look into a bot if that’s not working out. Appreciate the pointers :)
Thank you, glad it was helpful for you!

is there a good "default" channel setup for automod? trying to think of baseline rules for this new world where we have to have rules set up or live with the uggo 2-feed solution
i'm split between automod and airstack now as they seem to have opposite approaches. automod now is about keeping out what u don't want whereas airstack is about allowing what u do want (⌒_⌒;) the automod rules i had before covered both preferences with a middle ground to manually mod. now i'm having to rethink
haven’t dove into Airstack with that much but @jtgi will probably build anything you want directly haha - he was super responsive to my DM the other day and implemented the feature I asked for in like 20 minutes haha
yeah i asked him about autoboost/like being taken out ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
would brainstorm on stream with you, im doing the same rn
Just read your blog https://paragraph.xyz/@ispeaknerd.eth/curating-chaotic-channels Was this stream recorded? Love to listen to the full version.

hi dan! how do i see/view the casts i bookmarked 🥲
Thank you for the introduction. When I added a mod, others couldn't add it, which was the way I wanted it.
hey dan i just made two new proposals on frame uiux improvements would appreciate your input https://warpcast.com/undefined/0x5ec90cf9 https://warpcast.com/undefined/0xbadbd898
This is helpful... thank you for sharing it or I would've missed it!
I think our channel lost the host after the update 😳
offtopic, but is media viewer rotation coming anytime soon? 👀
@brennan is this how we finna chop it up in the stu
Roughly yeah, I need to spend more time documenting for the team (found a good explainer blog post this morning), atm priority mode seems to be working OK but it's really centralizing attention on a few accounts and making discovery harder. We either use this or @botornot, or a somehow combination of the two
Wake up babe, you’re a co-moderator now
